In this world of 2070, mankind has made space travel possible for more than just the elite and the explorers. Thanks to the work of scientists like Dr Franka Jenson, space stations now orbit the moons of the major planets in Earth's solar system and both Mars and Earth's Moon have colonies. The age of terraforming is potentially about to commence with the first experiment in altering a planet's weather taking place on Metis Space Station, orbiting Jupiter. And this will be the initial setting of the Campaign.
The Earth still operates a political system similar to the late 20th Century where world powers compete in ideology, wealth and influence. However, that world in 2070 now looks to the stars as a means of expansion and control of materials and wealth. The major powers on Earth are still very much in competition. Though, the role of the United Nations in supervising and lending a gentle reminder of limitations has been largely revoked due to early 21st century actions in the Middle East. The Middle East viewed from space is now a desert, plagued by storms and open to the atmosphere due to devastating nuclear weaponry being deployed by the American Alliance - America and its partner states in Europe. As such, some powers hold more sway than others and that is something the rest of the planet have not been swift to forget.
Therefore, colonies on Mars and Luna have had there fair share of tension as the power struggles on the Earth below shift and blow like the sands of the East.
However, as there is a new era dawning for colonisation, the future of humanity is bright and the potential can be felt across the solar system.
